Null Island ID Card

Installation, 2025

Too often, we're asked: Why does this person need to know my name? At shops, hotels, or returns counters, personal data like name, birthdate, or address is routinely requested—even when it's unnecessary. Null Island’s Identity Card is your response: a customizable photo ID you control.
Whether you're returning a broken laptop or checking into a hotel that insists on copying your ID, this card lets you push back. It’s a reminder: official identification is rarely legally required, yet we’re conditioned to hand it over without question.
The Null Island ID isn’t meant to deceive—it’s meant to provoke thought. It's a privacy tool, a statement, and a conversation starter. Carrying it helps you train your critical eye: Is this ID request truly justified? If not, you now have a polite, creative alternative.
While businesses aren’t required to accept the Null Island ID, it highlights how often our identity is demanded unnecessarily. Use it to reclaim control and question data collection norms—on Null Island or anywhere else.
